The financial conversation nobody ever taught you to have.

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month — and if you’re like most people, that phrase probably makes you tune out a little. Life insurance can feel like one of those “someday” topics. Something you’ll deal with eventually. Something that only matters after you’re gone.

That’s the myth I want to break this month.

The Myth: “It’s Just a Death Benefit”

Most people think of life insurance as one thing: a check your family gets after you pass away. And yes, that protection matters — deeply. But if that’s all you think a policy can do, you’re missing most of the picture.

Here’s the number that should stop you: millions of American families are underinsured, and even more have never had anyone actually walk them through what their coverage can do for them — not just their loved ones — while they’re still here.

That’s not an accident. It’s a gap. And it’s exactly the kind of gap I built this business to close.

The Reframe: A Policy That Works While You Live

Here’s what almost nobody tells you: the right policy isn’t just protection for the people you leave behind. Done right, it’s a resource you can actually use — while you’re alive, healthy, sick, working, or retired.

That can look like:

• Living benefits — access to a portion of your death benefit if you’re diagnosed with a chronic, critical, or terminal illness. Not a “someday” benefit. A right-now benefit, when you need it most.
• Cash value growth — certain policies build value over time that you can access, often in ways that can be tax-free, while you’re still living your life.
• Flexibility, not just finality — instead of a policy that only “pays off” when you die, you have a tool that can support you through the unexpected — an illness, a job loss, a life change — long before that day ever comes.

This is the conversation nobody ever taught us to have. We were taught to buy a policy and forget about it. Nobody taught us to ask: what can this actually do for me, right now?

I talk to my clients about this using a mountain.

There’s a climb — your working, saving, investing years. And there’s a descent — retirement, when you’re living off what you’ve built. Most people only think about life insurance protecting the people around them if something happens on the way up.

But living benefits change that. They protect you, mid-climb — if illness or crisis hits before you ever reach the top. And the right policy can also help fund the way down, giving you income and options in retirement, not just a legacy for after you’re gone.
