Homework for Grown-Ups: The Lesson They Never Taught Us

The financial conversation nobody ever taught you to have. School teaches you algebra, but it doesn't teach you how money actually works — so this August, Dawn O'Brien hands out homework for grown-ups.

The financial conversation nobody ever taught you to have

Every August, it’s the same scramble. Backpacks. Pencils. First-day-of-school outfits laid out the night before. We spend weeks making sure our kids are ready for the year ahead — new supplies, new schedules, new goals.

But when’s the last time you did that for yourself?

Here’s the truth nobody hands you in a syllabus: school teaches you algebra, but it doesn’t teach you how money actually works. Nobody sits you down and explains the difference between good debt and bad debt, how to make your money tax-advantaged, or how to build something that outlives a paycheck. We graduate knowing the Pythagorean theorem and not knowing how to read our own credit report.

I know, because I spent almost 23 years in the automotive industry reading other people’s credit reports — watching good, hard-working people get boxed in by financial lessons they were never taught. That’s the conversation nobody ever taught us to have. And it’s the reason I walked away from autopilot.

Homework for Grown-Ups

So here’s your assignment this August — no red pen required:

Lesson 1: Read your own report card. Not the one from high school. The one that tells you where your money is actually going, what your debt is really costing you, and what “tax-advantaged” could look like for your family.

Lesson 2: Trade the old uniform. Maybe yours was a name badge, a punch clock, or a ceiling you’ve quietly stopped pushing against. This is the elective that actually pays off — no tuition, flexible hours, and you earn while you learn.

Lesson 3: Show up for the group project. This is the one most people skip. Because building real, lasting financial independence was never meant to be done solo.

This isn’t just for parents relearning the syllabus, either. Some of the most mission-driven people I meet are college students — the ones who already know they don’t want the traditional “get a job, wait 40 years” path, and are looking for something that lets them build with purpose while they’re still figuring everything else out.

Graduating Into Teams of Teams

Here’s what nobody tells you about passing this class: the real growth happens when you stop being just a student and start teaching the next one. I never set out to be unusual in this business. But three years in, I’ve realized I’m something of a unicorn — not just building a book of clients, but building an organization of Trainers and Team Leaders, teams raising up their own teams. It’s humbling, if I’m being real with you. I didn’t find this business. This business found me. And now I get to watch it multiply through people I never would have met otherwise — career-changers, parents, mission-driven students, people who just wanted someone to finally explain the syllabus.

If you’re the kind of person who’s ready to stop cramming the night before and actually start building — debt-free living, tax-advantaged wealth, on your own terms — class is in session.
