From Stuck to Purposeful: Why Financial Literacy Is a Community Movement — And How You Can Be Part of It
You are not behind. You were not taught. Dawn O'Brien on why financial literacy is a community movement, what stuck actually looks like, and how purpose-driven work changes families and futures.

There is something I hear over and over again in conversations with families, friends, and people who find their way to my inbox.
“I feel so behind.”
“I don’t even know where to start.”
“I wish someone had told me this sooner.”
And every single time I hear it, my heart does two things at once. It breaks a little, because I know that feeling personally. And it fills up, because I also know what’s possible on the other side of it.
The Fear Is Real. But It’s Not the Full Story.
Most people who feel stuck with money are not stuck because they made bad decisions. They are stuck because nobody gave them the right information at the right time.
The system was not built to teach us. Schools don’t cover it. Most workplaces don’t address it. And the financial industry has historically kept the most powerful strategies in boardrooms and country clubs, far away from the communities that needed them most.
So if you feel behind, I want you to hear this clearly:
You are not behind. You were not taught.
There is a difference. And that difference changes everything.
What “Stuck” Actually Looks Like
Stuck doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like:
- A 401(k) you’ve been contributing to for years but don’t fully understand
- Life insurance you have through your job but have never actually looked at
- A retirement that feels abstract, something you’ll “figure out later”
- A nagging feeling that you’re working hard but not getting ahead
- Fear that it’s too late to change anything
Sound familiar? You are not alone. These are some of the most common conversations I have, with people at every income level, every age, every background.
And here’s what I know to be true: awareness is the turning point. The moment you decide to understand your money, not hand it off and hope for the best, but actually understand it, everything shifts.
Financial Literacy Is Not Just Personal. It’s a Community Issue.
Here is what I am deeply passionate about:
The families who need financial education the most are often the ones with the least access to it. Veterans who served this country and came home without a roadmap for financial independence. Latino families building businesses and legacies without the tools they were never given. Single parents making every dollar count but not knowing how to make those dollars work harder. Young people graduating into a world that handed them student loans and called it preparation.
This is not a personal finance problem. This is a community crisis. And it requires people who care enough to do something about it.
That is why the work I do has evolved beyond individual financial planning. It has become a mission, to bring financial clarity, confidence, and community to the people who deserve it most.
The Person Who Changes the Community First Had to Change Themselves
I want to tell you something about my own story.
There was a time when I was that person. Afraid. Behind. Not sure how any of this was going to work. I stepped into this work and the first few months, the income wasn’t there. I had to choose, every single day, to believe in the mission before the results showed up.
And then something shifted. The work stopped being something I did from my head and started coming from my heart. I stopped showing up for a paycheck and started showing up for purpose. And the income followed.
I share that not to inspire you with a highlight reel, but to be honest with you. Purpose-driven work is not always comfortable. But it is always worth it.
This Is for You — No Matter Where You Are
I wrote this for two people, and they might actually be the same person at different points in their journey.
The first person feels stuck. Maybe overwhelmed. Maybe ashamed they don’t know more about money. Maybe convinced it’s too late.
To that person I say: Start here. Start now. One conversation changes everything. You don’t need to know everything, you just need someone in your corner who will tell you the truth, show you your options, and walk alongside you. That is exactly what we do.
The second person is driven. They are watching their community struggle and want to do something about it. They have been looking for a vehicle that matches their values, something that is about service, not sales. Something with a mission they can actually stand behind.
To that person I say: We might be looking for each other.
I am actively building a team of purpose-driven individuals who are passionate about changing communities, one family, one conversation, one life at a time. People who believe that financial literacy is a right, not a privilege. People who are ready to work for something bigger than a paycheck.
What Empowerment Beyond Money Actually Means
When I updated the focus of Rev Up Your Wealth & Co., I wasn’t just changing a tagline. I was naming what this work has always been about.
Money is a tool. But what we are really building is:
- Freedom, the ability to say yes to what matters and no to what doesn’t
- Choice, options at every stage of life, not just survival
- Legacy, something to pass on that is bigger than a balance sheet
- Purpose, a life built with intention, not just income
That is what financial empowerment looks like. And that is what every family in every community deserves access to.
Where Do You Go From Here?
If you read this and felt seen, whether you’re the person who is stuck or the person who wants to serve, the next step is simple.
Start a conversation.
Not a sales call. Not a pitch. A real conversation about where you are, what you want, and what is actually possible.
Because here is what I know after more than 20 years in this work:
It is never too late to start. And the right information at the right time changes everything.
The families in your community are waiting for someone who actually cares. That person might be you.
The door is open. Come on in.
